Mechanical release joint

A mechanical release joint is used to separate upon a preset pull‑out force when the downhole tool becomes stuck, allowing the upper section to be retrieved. Subsequently, a higher‑strength fishing tool is employed to recover the lower section. In the event of a stuck condition, the joint is released by applying an upward pull that shears the shear pins. The magnitude of the release pull can be adjusted by varying the number of shear pins. The interlocking, cross‑type design of the upper and lower connectors enables torque transmission.
